Cincinnati Ballet - Jewels

Why see Cincinnati Ballet - Jewels?

balanchine's masterpiece

Continuing from Rep- 1 "More Room To Play", George Balanchine's masterpiece "Jewels" will be Rep-2 in Cincinnati Ballet's 2023/24 season, set to grace the Music Hall's Springer Auditorium this November. Since its premiere in 1967, this piece has been hailed as the first full-length ballet to be abstract and continues to stand as one of Balanchine's most acclaimed works to this day. With music from Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, you won't want to miss this performance.

The inspiration behind this work came from jewelry designer Claude Arpels. All three acts are influenced by gemstones typically found in high-end jewelry.

The first act, "Emeralds", whisks you away to the 19th century, promising French romanticism with music by French composer  Gabriel Faur.

The second act, titled "Rubies", presents a new and fresh perspective, a complete juxtaposition to the first act. It embodies a more contemporary and fiery essence, paying tribute to the fusion of Balanchine and Stravinsky's work.

The final act, "Diamonds", draws inspiration from Balanchine's upbringing and training ground, Imperial Russia. This act serves as the perfect conclusion to the masterpiece, emphasizing the classical aspect and creating a magical atmosphere with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3.
