The Roommate

The Roommate at Cincinnati Playhouse In The Park

Why see The Roommate?

A Nuanced Portrait Of Womanhood, Ageing and Identity

Cincinnati's Playhouse In The Park continues their diverse 2018/19 season programming with rising playwright and Juilliard alumnus Jen Silverman's riotous black comedy The Roommate, directed by former Pittsburgh City Theatre Company Artistic Director Tracy Brigden. The insightful new work explores themes of ageing, womanhood and identity with a rebellious sense of fun that sticks to fingers up to societal expectations and pressures.

Described as The Odd Couple meets Breaking Bad, The Roommate follows Sharon, a 50-something Iowa native who's recently divorced and suffering from empty nest syndrome. When she posts a listing for a roommate to take up her empty room, the eccentric Robyn enters in a flurry of color and fascination. A middle aged woman herself, the intrepid Robyn's certainly taken the road less traveled in her life, but is now looking for a place to lie low. As Sharon uncovers Robyn's secrets, her own desire for adventure and a little danger is ignited.
